Handyman and carpentry work

For when you don't need a full builder.

Handyman and carpentry work across Byron Bay, Bangalow, Lennox Head, Alstonville and Ballina, done by Homesmith, a qualified carpenter. From $420 + GST a half day or $760 + GST a full day, for one smith, fixed before you book.

Book a day, hand over the list in the order you care about, and we work down it. Most of that list is what people would call odd jobs. The difference is that a carpenter is doing them.

What kind of jobs

Anything that involves timber, fixings, a wall or a bracket is fair game. In practice the list usually looks something like this.

Built and assembled

Flat pack furniture of every brand. Beds, wardrobes, desks, bookcases, outdoor settings, cots, office chairs. Anchored to the wall where it needs to be. Anything tall gets anchored if there are children in the house.

Hung and mounted

Artwork, heavy mirrors, gallery walls, floating shelves, curtain rods and blinds, coat racks, bathroom fittings, towel rails, bike and board racks in the garage.

Screens

TV wall mounting at the height that suits your sofa, cables run in wall or through a painted duct, soundbars, brackets swapped, the whole thing levelled properly.

Fixed and adjusted

Doors that catch, drawers that will not sit square, cupboard hinges, screen doors, gates that drag, loose handrails, skirting and architrave damage, small timber repairs, silicone and sealant that has given up.

Built from scratch

Shelving into alcoves, wardrobe fit outs, window seats, VJ panelling, small joinery.

What we do not do

Plumbing, electrical and gas all need a licensed trade, so those are not ours. New decks and structural work belong with a builder. We say so early and pass you to someone who holds the licence.

What it costs

Pricing is $420 + GST for a half day or $760 + GST for a full day, for one smith. Standard work sits at those prices. Specialist finishing and repair work is quoted before you book. Either way the price is fixed once we quote it, and it does not change because a job took longer than it looked.

What you are booking is a block of our time, not a set of jobs, so there is no per item price to work out. If the list runs out before the block does, we keep going on whatever else you want seen to.

Fixings, brackets and hardware are charged at cost, and we will tell you roughly what those will run to when we quote. There is no call out fee anywhere in the service area.

Day booking

We do not guess from a list of job names. A three metre gallery wall in old hardwood is not the same as six pictures in plasterboard.

Send the list and whatever photos you have. We come back and tell you how many days it looks like, before anything is booked.

How we work

You send the list and whatever photos you have. We come back and tell you how many days it looks like. Nothing is booked until you say so.

On the day we text when we are on the way. Drop sheets go down over any floor we are working on. A detector goes over the wall first, so nothing meets a pipe or a cable. We work in your priority order, so if the day runs out, what is left over is the stuff you cared least about.

If we finish early we carry on with whatever else you point at, at no extra cost. And everything we carried in goes out again, including the flat pack cardboard.

Every job carries a 12 month workmanship guarantee. If something we built, hung or fixed lets go inside a year, we come back and sort it.

Common questions

How many jobs can a handyman do in a day?

That depends on the list, so we do not guess. Curtain rods, door adjustments, shelf brackets and towel rails are quick. Flat pack furniture and gallery walls are the slow ones. Send the list and we will tell you how many days it looks like.

Do I need to be home while you work?

No. Plenty of jobs happen while people are at work. We need access, a clear idea of where things go, and a phone number for the one question that always comes up. Marking the wall with a pencil or a bit of tape where you want the TV or the artwork saves a phone call and gets you exactly what you pictured.

Do you supply the materials?

We bring every fixing, anchor and bracket the job needs, and those are charged at cost on the invoice. Items like shelves, TV brackets, curtain rods and flat pack furniture you buy yourself, because you will want to choose them. If you would rather we picked something up on the way, ask when you book.

What if a job turns out to be bigger than it looked?

We tell you before starting it, not after. Sometimes a wall is not what the photo suggested, or a door is out of square rather than just swollen. In that case you get the options and the honest time cost, and you decide whether it goes ahead or comes off the list. The price for the day does not move.

Can you work in an apartment or a strata building?

Yes. Most work inside your own walls needs nobody's approval. Anything touching common property, an external wall, a balcony or a shared ceiling usually does, and that approval is the owner's to get rather than ours. Buildings also tend to restrict noisy work to set hours, so it is worth reading the by laws before we pick a day.

Our house is from the seventies. Is it safe to drill into the walls?

Not everywhere, and it is worth knowing which walls before anything goes up. Fibro sheeting, some older wall linings and a lot of eaves and bathroom sheeting in houses built before about 1990 can contain asbestos, and drilling into it releases fibres. We identify it, stop, and tell you what we are looking at. Removal is a licensed job rather than ours. Often there is another wall or another fixing method that avoids the whole problem, which is the conversation worth having first.

Where we work

Roughly a 50km radius of Byron Bay, with no call out fee anywhere inside it.
