The height is the easy part. The fixing is what keeps the TV on the wall.
Timber stud
Fix through the plasterboard into the centre of the studs with 75mm to 100mm structural screws. Find both edges of the stud with a detector and mark the centre, do not trust one beep. A screw that catches only the edge of a stud will hold on the day and pull out six months later.
Brick or block
Drill with a hammer drill and fix with sleeve anchors or masonry screws rated for the load. Fix into the brick itself, not the mortar bed, because mortar crumbles under shear. On rendered walls, drill through the render and confirm you are into solid brick before you fit the bracket.
Fibro or cladding
Fibro and cladding carry no load at all, so every fixing must reach the framing behind. Use a backing plate spanning two studs if the bracket holes do not line up with the frame. Drill fibro slowly with a masonry bit, and treat pre 1990 sheeting as asbestos until it is confirmed otherwise.
Plasterboard only
A large TV must not hang on plasterboard anchors alone. Toggles and hollow wall anchors are rated for a static pull, not the leverage of a screen on an arm, and they tear a hole through the sheet when they fail. If there is no stud where you need one, fit a timber or steel backing plate fixed to the framing, or move the mount.
What height should a TV be mounted?
Mount the TV so the centre of the screen is at your eye level when you are seated, which is usually 1000mm to 1100mm from the floor in a lounge room. Eye height is the measurement that matters, not the size of the screen. A bigger screen keeps the same centre height and simply extends further up and down the wall. Mounting higher forces your neck back for the length of a film, and no bracket tilt fully fixes that.

Heights are to the centre and bottom edge of the screen, measured from the floor. Sofa heights assume a seated eye height of 1050mm, bed heights 1150mm.

Heights for the most common sizes
55 inch TV mounting height
For a 55 inch TV viewed from a sofa, the centre of the screen sits about 1050mm from the floor. The screen is about 685mm tall, so the bottom edge lands at roughly 710mm. A comfortable viewing distance is 1.7m to 2.5m.
65 inch TV mounting height
For a 65 inch TV viewed from a sofa, the centre of the screen sits about 1050mm from the floor and the bottom edge at roughly 645mm. The screen is about 810mm tall. A comfortable viewing distance is 2.0m to 3.0m.
75 inch TV mounting height
For a 75 inch TV viewed from a sofa, the centre still sits about 1050mm from the floor, which puts the bottom edge at roughly 585mm. A bigger screen gets a lower bottom edge rather than a higher centre. A comfortable viewing distance is 2.3m to 3.4m.
Getting the height right in your room
How to measure your eye height
Sit where you normally watch and have someone measure from the floor to the level of your eyes. That number is where the centre of the screen should go. On a standard sofa it usually lands between 1000mm and 1100mm.
Mounting a TV in a bedroom
In a bedroom the centre of the screen goes higher, about 1150mm, because you are sitting up against a bedhead rather than on a sofa. A slight downward tilt helps if the bed is high.
Mounting a TV above a fireplace
Above a fireplace the screen usually ends up well above eye height, and you spend the whole film looking up. If it has to go there, a pull down mount brings the screen back to eye level when you watch, and the wall above the firebox needs checking for heat first.

Should a TV be mounted higher than eye level?
No. The centre of the screen should sit at eye level when you are seated, because anything higher makes you tilt your head back for the whole film. The only reason to go higher is a physical obstruction, and then you tilt the bracket down to compensate.
Can you mount a TV above a fireplace?
You can, but it puts the screen well above seated eye level and we generally advise against it. If the layout leaves no alternative, use a tilting or pull down bracket and check the mantel heat before you commit. Heat and viewing angle are the two things that ruin these installs.
Can you mount a TV on a plasterboard wall?
Not on plasterboard anchors alone for anything larger than a small screen. The bracket must be fixed into the timber or steel studs behind the sheet, or into a backing plate fixed to the studs. Plasterboard anchors pull through under the leverage of a wall mounted TV.
