Most shelves that sag were installed in the wrong order, with the hole drilled before the fixing was chosen. We start with the load, then find the framing.
Plasterboard is fine for light work as long as the anchor is rated for it. Anything heavy gets fixed to a stud, or to a timber cleat spanning two of them.
Plenty of older Northern Rivers homes are hardwood framed, and hardwood splits if you rush it, so those get pre drilled.
Near the coast, salt air makes short work of plated hardware. Exposed rails and garage racking get corrosion resistant fixings.

Yes. Light shelves go in with rated cavity anchors. Heavier ones get a timber cleat or fixings into the studs, depending on the load.
